The Amangalla Hotel, Galle
The Amangalla hotel located in Galle lies within the grounds of Galle Fort. The building built in the 17th Century used to be the Officer’s Mess for the Dutch East India Company.
It became the New Oriental Hotel in 1865 and became the hotel to stay at in Galle. Today the Amangalla (since 2005) still commands the attention of many visitors. Sitting in the lobby having tea and admiring the building is perhaps a must. Unfortunately on the day I went, service was very slow and the food was not very exciting. Our experience was salvaged by a lovely bellman who very volunteered to give us an extensive tour of the hotel.

The hotel has been restored beautifully and is well worth the visit if you enjoy architecture and history. I just hope you will have a better dining experience than I had. Do note: when we left and asked the hotel for assistance for a “tuk-tuk” they said they were unable to assist as we were not in house guests. To me this is not acceptable. Perhaps it was just an “off” day for the Aman. I hope you will have a better experience.
