With the latest restaurants and bars converging around the Telok Ayer and Chinatown area, a friend and I decided that a 2-night stay at Far East Hospitality’s Clan Hotel would be a fun experience.

The Location
Located just across from Amoy and Club Street, the Clan hotel (opened in March 2021) is perfect for those who are looking to hit the local hawker haunts of Hong Lim Complex and Smith Street Market and Food Centre. Bars and restaurants which include several Michelin starred restaurants such as Nouri, Cloud Street and Lerouy are just across the road from the hotel.
Places of Interest include the Thian Hock Keng Temple (5 minutes on foot), Masjid Al-Abrar (5 minutes on foot), Chinatown, Ann Siang Hill (10 minutes on foot) and Gardens by the Bay (30 minutes on foot).

The Room
There are 3 room categories. Grand Premier (36 sqm), Premier (31 sqm) and Deluxe (24 sqm). All Premier Rooms come with King Beds. Twin Beds are only available in the Deluxe Room category. I booked the Deluxe Room.
Deluxe Room – at 24 sqm, expect the room to be compact. It is well designed with the basin and open wardrobe to the right as you enter and the wc and shower to the left. There is no bath. The entire area can be screened off by a sliding door, separating the bathroom facilities from the bedroom. The bed is comfortable with firm pillows provided. There is a sitting area by the window for you to enjoy the view.

The view from the room (2803) allowed me to appreciate the Chinatown area and to enjoy the evening buzz through the comfort of my room.

The Facilities
The Gym – state of the art equipment with a beautiful view; there was nothing to stop me going for a quick workout except for the fact that I did not have my gym gear. The space and layout is good. The shower facilities are located outside the gym cross a small hallway.

The Pool – located on Level 30 of the building, isn’t very large, but it offers a nice view of the city. There is a jacuzzi (closed off at the time of writing).

Food & Beverage
Operated by the Tung Lok group the main food & beverage outlet is called Qin. This is also where breakfast is served.
Across from Qin is the outdoor bar, which at the time of writing was not open. Nonetheless, this was a great spot to sit out and enjoy a book (just bring your own bottled water).
Breakfast was a nice mix of local and international eats. We enjoyed the Home Brewed Local Porridge and a posh version of Kaya on Toast.

Things to Do
If you are into history, culture and food, staying at The Clan comes with benefits.
Explore the hawker delights at Hong Lim Complex before taking a walk that leads you towards the Houses of Parliament and the Singapore River (Clarke Quay). On your second day, you can head to the Smith Street Food Centre for breakfast before roaming the streets (Temple Street, Sago Lane, North Bridge & South Bridge Road) to enjoy the atmosphere. If you enjoy street art lookout for the works by Yip Yew Chong which are scattered through the area.

Conclusion
The rooms (and pool) are small at the Clan but a stay at this hotel does make for a perfect base to explore this historical part of Singapore.
Foodie haven at your doorstep.
During my 2 day stay, I managed to explore the area, enjoyed the local hawker delights at Hong Lim Complex and Smith Street Food Centre, hit a few cocktail bars (I’d recommend – Employees Only, Pocket Junior, Native & Corduroy Palace) had dinner at one of the many restaurants at Amoy Street (I’d recommend Nouri for Crossroads Cuisine, Appetite to experience Chef Ivan Brehm’s latest R&D ideas and artwork, North Miznon – for modern Israeli dining, Cloud Street – for modern Australian interpreted by Chef Rishi Naleendra, Guccio for classic Italian, Le Bon Funk for natural wines to name a few.)
