Travelling in times of COVID (Germany)

This experience is shared from a 10 day stay in Munich and Baden-Baden from the end of October to early November.

The Flight

Passengers are provided with a care pack that consists of 1 x hand sanitiser, 1 x face mask, 1 x alcohol wipes.

I would recommend you bring your own wet wipes and additional face masks. I changed my face mask every 4 hours. The N95 that I purchased from the pharmacy at Great World City (B2) comes in packs of 3 (3M brand). There is a hook with each mask that you can use to avoid putting pressure on your ear.

Munich Immigration

Immigration was painless. I had printed with me the German registration form (as of 28 November 2021, this is no longer required), my vaccination certificate from My Notarise.

The Hotels

As the drive to Munich was to take 4 hours we checked into an airport hotel to freshen up. The usual social rules apply.

The hotels will ask to see your Vaccination Certificate upon check in.

Out and About

At the time of my trip, face masks were required when indoors. They were not required when outdoors though I saw some wearing their masks outdoors.

Germany has their own version of our Trace Together App. It is called Luca. If you do not have the app, the restaurant/museum will ask you to fill in a form for their records.

The Luca App which is similar to our Trace Together App

A mask is required when you are leaving your dining table to head to the bathroom or elsewhere in the restaurant/hotel.

Conclusion

Different countries have different rules regarding social distancing. Check with the embassy website and ask the hotel what the current regulations are when you check in. I had my mask on whenever there was larger groups of people. People did not mind and seems indifferent. I saw families using hand sanitisers before meals and all public areas and hotels had hand sanitisers on hand. I also brought with me several ART kits and tested myself every 3 days.

SG Butler Tip: PCR Testing

This was required before departure (48hours before). Do check for the location of the local test centre and I would suggest making your appointment in advance (and don’t be late as there was quite a queue when I went for my appointment).

Most test centres/laboratories don’t open on Sunday so if you are on a Monday flight (the Munich flight leaves at around noon) you will need to be in Munich on Saturday to get your test done. There were no test centres in Baden-Baden that were able to get me my results in time for my Monday flight. I found a test centre in Munich and booked a 7pm slot (Saturday). I was there at 630pm and there was a queue. It was efficient and everyone was polite and friendly. I received my results via email at around 1am on Monday morning.

This test centre was a make shit set up at the foyer of the Concert Hall

The medical team all spoke English and I found the experience very pleasant. I did have trouble finding the test centre and the area was not well lit. Fortunately, a nice lady directed me.

In closing, not harm being a touch “kiasu” and always keep an eye on the news when on the road.

Safe travels!
