Copenhagen – Hot Dogs & Hamburgers

I am not sure if one thinks of hotdogs and hamburgers when dining out in Copenhagen but, yes, Copenhagen makes some of the best hot dogs (called Polser) and hamburgers in the world.

John’s Hotdog Deli

Hotdogs came to Denmark in the 1920s. One of the most popular isJohn’s Hotdog Deli.  There is a kiosk located outside the Central Train Station (just a 10-minute walk from the Nobis Hotel).  Around for 13 years, the lady was extremely helpful and I was sorted out with my late morning bite quickly.  Choose from the menu board and watch your hot dog being prepared. Don’t forget to order the chocolate milk. It is traditionally taken together with your hotdog.

Different types of hotdogs are available.
Very delish. You can order the hotdog without the bun.
This lady was extremely helpful although she did not speak much English. I noticed that she took care to select the hotdog that was grilled nicely over her electric grill.

The Danish do excellent hamburgers too!  I had my fill by dining at POPL, Gasoline Burger and at Max.

POPL

POPL is the brainchild of the restaurant Noma. What started as a pop-up during the pandemic, POPL now has a permanent home by the water in the neighborhood of Christianshavn.

SG Butler Tip: Located by the waterfront around 10 minutes away from the city centre, reservations are essential (available online) as this place gets very popular particularly in fine weather when many enjoy sitting outdoors enjoying the view.

The burgers are dry-aged and are sandwiched between a potato bun from the famed Danish bakery Hart Bageri. Organic Danish beef is used. Be sure to order some fries and a beer to complete the experience.  The cheeseburger (Kr.150) was good but for me, the winner was the fries (Kr.45). Cooked in beef fat – the fries were very good.  I also enjoyed the cucumber salad.

Clockwise: Refreshing cucumber salad with fresh herbs and sesame seeds, delish fries, and POPL’s classic cheeseburger.
Cooked in beef fat, these fries were very good.

I would recommend one of their draft beers.

GASOLINE BURGER

With several branches in Copenhagen, I headed to the flagship branch located at the site of a former gas station.  Opened in 2016, Gasoline Burger grinds their own meat daily and uses a soft baked potato bun.  In 2017, Gasoline Grill made it to Bloomberg’s top 27 best burgers in the world (Around the World in 27 Burgers: The Best from Brooklyn to Bali).

I had the original that consisted of 100% organic beef, crisp lettuce, sliced tomato, raw red onion, organic pickles, and Gasoline Grill’s own sauce.  I added a slice of cheese. The combo (fries + drink) costs Kr.125. Add Kr.10 for the cheese).

Get here early. A queue does form. Limited seating (outdoors).

SG Butler Tip: There is a Gasoline Grill at the airport too. And yes, I brought a few burgers home. It does travel.
